Christmas Craft: A Christmas Wreath

Christmas Wreath Workshop is back! This time, for a good cause to make someone else's lives a little cheerier. At the workshop, each student will be given two wreaths to craft and Poppy requests that one will be gifted to a Nursing or Children's Home as a decorative piece to brighten up their space. The Christmas Wreath Making Workshop with Poppy Flora Studio in December 2015: It was a beautiful Saturday morning. I looked around me and all I saw was blue skies and sunshine. These days don’t come around all the time and when they do, I take a step back and give thanks to haze-less days. Our Christmas Advent activity for the Day 5 was to hand-make a Christmas Wreath for the front door. We needed one because Ewan and Faye broke our old trusty Christmas Wreath five days ago when I took it out from the Christmas Props Box. Just like owning our first live Christmas tree, there is no turning back to buying fake trees and wreaths from here on.

As if Poppy Flora Studio heard my desperate call for a Chrismassy front door, they came up with a new Christmas Wreath-Making workshop to accommodate families with children! I had to give this a go even though I wasn't too sure if it'd be too much for Ewan to handle. He is, after all, only three. There were shears for cutting off pines and wires to secure acorns to the wreath. They were not exactly children-friendly materials but with parental guidance, I was certain we could pull it off. Besides, Poppy Flora Studio welcomes participants of all levels! Sharing our work of art:

Poppy Flora Studio, founded by Sarah, holds seasonal workshops in their studio at 311 Old Bird Cage Road. When she sent me the address, I went, "Awwww it seems like a great start to a whimsical morning with a road name like that!" With that, I brought the whole family down together with Mum in the Making and Life's Tiny Miracles for this intimate holiday de-stressor workshop. Not only did we bring home a Christmas Wreath each with our own personal touches to it, we spent some good bonding time laughing at funny antics of our mischievous kids. This was everyone's first attempt in wreath-making and the results were totally commendable!

When I say personal touches, I really meant serious personalisations. As soon as Sarah announced that we choose our own materials from her floral console, my son rushed for the brightest blue! I was hoping to display his creation for our main door but looking at his outcome, I decided to put his up for his own room door! *Woops* I chose eucalyptus, acorns, dried red maple leaves, hanging vines and pockets of bright yellows and reds to fill my pine-wound wreath. I must admit I had absolutely no clue how I'd like the wreath to turn out. It was my first time working with flowers and I was a little bit nervous. But as I worked on it, my Christmas Wreath started to take shape and it got prettier and prettier with each adornment.

The studio is bright and homely, set inside a colonial shophouse. Nothing too rigid or structured because here at the Poppy Studio, we get to enjoy a few hours of quiet repose as we fill our hands with nature's fall and winter color palettes. Not exactly peaceful because we had kids around but relaxing enough because the daddies were there to babysit the under threes. We had two older boys, aged four and six, who sat at the table with us to make their own Christmas Wreaths. They actually sat through the whole workshop without fussing and made very presentable wreaths! I was really proud of them.

I wondered how life was in the past in this area and what they were used for? Bookshop? Coffeeshop? Residential? A School? It is within vicinity of the Seletar Camp and makes such beautiful pictures for a vintage photoshoot. Only when I arrived did I realised I had been here before with a wedding couple (I used to run a wedding business) for their wedding shoot! Memories.

The Christmas workshops by Poppy Flora Studio starts at S$290 per person. With this new Christmas with the Family collaboration, they are kick-starting a new class at more than half the price! The wreaths in this workshop will be smaller and easier to handle if children are coming in for the session. In fact, this is a good size even for me. I prefer a dainty looking Christmas wreath on my door over a bulky one. It isn't as if we were living in a mansion. My front door is too narrow to hold up a monstrous sized Christmas wreath anyways.

It makes a great getaway from the city, not only for families but for girlfriends as well. I can so imagine a room full of noisy chatters and laughters, with a photoshoot of everyone with their handmade Christmas Wreaths at the end of the workshop. I must add: the wreath base is recyclable. Meaning, you can use it again for next year with fresh pines and dried oak leaves. Attend a workshop and bring back a skill to last a lifetime.

I would recommend children aged four and above to attend this workshop. Here is us with Sarah, the founder and creative director of Poppy Flora Studio. Merry Christmas my dear friends!
