Programmes like Beach Cleanups and Movie Nights sound like something I would love for my children to participate in. What better way to educate and inspire them on marine conservation than to put them in the field in person?

My family is now a member of Guardians of the S.E.A.A. [GOTS] and we want to do our part, however little, in marine conservation! As most of the in-house programmes are held in S.E.A. Aquarium after closing hours, we get to enter the aquarium for free by then. However, do note that although  this membership will allow you to enter S.E.A.A. for GOTS events, it is not valid for general admission into S.E.A Aquarium. A separate S.E.A. Aquarium One-Day Ticket will be required.

We attended an exclusive Shark's Feed Special Tour as part of the GOTS programme recently with our friends and it was definitely noteworthy because the Shark Seas Habitat back-of-house area is out of bounds to the public. Aquarist Izzat showed us around and talked about shark behaviours and feeding habits. We were brought into an enclosure we have never been before nor knew existed! We were all very excited except maybe for Faye, "I don't want the shark to bite my hand mommy." Oh how I wished we could dive into the tank Faye! But no, although there is a circular cylinder which allows guests to dive in at a fee to watch the sharks feed,  we were brought down to a section where we get front row seats to shark-watch.

The children were intrigued and the adults, impressed!

Are you passionate about all things marine life and wish to learn more about the ocean and conservation? Guardians of the S.E.A.A. is your first step to marine conservation and you can sign up here! Or how about try winning it first before you sign up?

If you are intending to catch the Singapore's only underwater dragon dance this Chinese New Year, you've got to get there by 28th of February 2018! Watch the Sea Goddess as she guides the underwater dragon through various marine habitats, and catch her at the Ocean Dome where she will regale the story of the Fish of Fortune. Well obviously, the Sea Goddess diver and the storyteller are two different persons but the experience for the children could be quite mesmerising.

She talked to them in the Ocean Dome about saying No to Sharks Fins, Garoupa and Tuna on the dinner table over Chinese New Year. I had been educating the children about how cruel sharks are being killed for its fins and they are naturally stay clear of Sharks Fins soup from the start. I didn't know we should stay clear of Garoupa and Tuna too? Reason being, these deep sea fishes are known to harbour high amounts of mercury in their bodies!

I loved it that it turned out to be an educational visit that day for us all.

We also went on a trail of discovery at six areas that showcased popular Lunar New Year traditions and beliefs. The children were given a card each to visit stations to uncover fun facts about marine life considered auspicious in Chinese culture, such as the leafy sea dragon and learn about the many ways to save the ocean.

We heard about the newly revamped Maritime Experiential Museum and will be embarking on a voyage of maritime adventure with them next!
