We had been to the parade itself last year, watched the floats passed us by in West Coast two years ago and this time, a whole new experience of enjoying stationary glitzy floats as we walked past it with no barricades separating us from them.

In previous years, our experiences of Chingay were stationary-spectators-moving-floats. So when we arrived at Chinatown on Sunday night, I expected the same arrangement. I was surprised to hear that our family will not be joining the public behind the barricades when we arrived at the meeting point! Seriously? Thank you for the exclusive privilege coming as media but wouldn't that be dangerous for my children?

Later did I realise that these barricades will be removed after the official opening of Heartland Celebrations by Dr Lily Neo and heartlanders are welcomed to stand alongside floats and performers for photograph opportunities! There were nine dazzling Chingay floats and performers from Singapore, Korea, Malaysia, Russia, and Thailand.

I vividly recall how we spent lots of time sitting at the bus stop waiting for the floats to drive past our neighbourhood only to enjoy just a few minutes of visual treat. With stationary floats, heartlanders get to spend a lot more time around it!

Watching the fireworks from afar was such a treat! We didn't have people squeezing with us for standing space. We were also away from the smoke caused by the fireworks and saved from the deafening sounds of firecrackers. Love the experience last evening at Chinatown in perfect weather and comfortable crowd!

Check in on the heartlands that will be involved in this year's Chingay celebrations and put that in your calendar! I'm sure the whole family will have a wonderful time bonding over carnival games, dazzling floats and lots of street performances.
