Three months into Faye's official swimming class and we've seen another side of her we've never quite noticed. She is fearless, bold and I would say a little proud. That pride must be what pushed her to swim that extra inch on her own and performing Dophin tricks just to impress. Well, I'm not complaining! Watching her achieve something every other lesson makes me proud.

She is a little advanced as compared to her peers and I give credit to the weekly pool dates I share with her ever since Ewan started swimming with The Swimming Room. He was three and a half years old and she, 20 months. Whenever Ewan was at the pool for lessons, we would also be waddling and playing in the water. The exposure and observations of her brother's swim class gave her this head start. It is true that second-borns have got the street-smarts in them because they never stop observing.

When you sign your child up as a student at The Swimming Room, he or she will receive a wetsuit, back float and swimming cap.

Just a couple of days ago at Ewan's swim class, she commented casually as she sat on the deck chair watching her brother, "So slow. I can do better."

My jaw dropped. I mean. My three year old said she could do better than her elder brother? He was attempting a 25m front crawl lap on his own for goodness sake! Hao Lian* or not you tell me? *hahah*

*Hao Lian means Cocky in Hokkien

She loves swimming; that's without a doubt. I didn't think there'll be any troubles getting her to swim class for that matter. But it was a struggle. So much that by the fourth lesson, she started crying at home when we told her we were going for swim class. Faye is smart. She threw a huge one that day because daddy was finally home from his travels and she wanted to make a statement.

Thank goodness the fight lasted only four lessons and Coach Eugene finally broke her to compliance. Oh don't take it the wrong way. He was patient as can be but he was also very firm. It wasn't, "Ahhhh poor girl. You don't want to go into the pool? It's okay. You can sit and watch. Try again next lesson." I think that's the easiest way out to handle a hysterical child. Instead, he spoke to her about what he was about to do and carried her into the pool, introducing games and toys to distract her. And it worked!

I was certain she was going to cry through the whole lesson like she does to me at home. No stopping until I gave her something. Then something beautiful happened! She started sobbing instead of yelling and nodded to everything Coach Eugene said. The next thing I know, they came to a compromise - that I sat close to them by the pool and watched the lesson. Hey! No problem! I'll do that!

Faye wanted to prove something. She wanted people to know that she was in charge but thank goodness we had a Coach who also wanted her to know that he was boss!

One moment she was crying and the next moment, she was laughing. Then on the fifth lesson, she suddenly stopped resisting. I wish I have the ability to break her as quickly as Coach Eugene! I've known her for 1,275 days now and she's still throwing her tantrums with us. 她吃定我了。

Ever since she started swimming with Coach Eugene and Coach Joann, Faye is a lot more skilled in her swim techniques. She is now diving [with help] to pick toys up from the floor bed, learning how to bob her head up to catch her breath while swimming and finally understanding the right way to kick her legs! Prior to formal swim lessons, she was jumping off ledges without knowing the dangers of drowning. Now, she is learning how to [literally put] save herself! She is a mermaid, a dolphin, a fish! Faye isn't afraid of the water and it helps a lot when it comes to learning a new skill.

In fact, I think she is a better listener than her brother and she will catch up to him quite quickly.

Faye is signed up with two other friends of the same age at The Swimming Room and I love it that classes are interactive! On the first lesson, Coach Eugene welcomed the kids with bubbles! Can you imagine how worried and suspicious this bunch of three year olds might be on Day One? That bottle of bubbles was the perfect ice-breaker. The apprehensive faces soon turned into happy ones.

We have two coaches in this class. Teacher Joann, although she holds her own swim classes too, joins in the fun as assistant coach in Faye's session! Her addition is most crucial especially when two out of three kids were whiney and teary from the start; one of them obviously mine. While Coach Eugene could be busy settling one crying child, she would spend time with the other two [see video clip above when Coach Eugene was trying to settle Faye]. Most importantly, keeping all three little ones safe with one more pair of watchful eye in the pool.

It is not normal practice to have two coaches in one session. We are lucky that Coach Joann has a previous class prior to ours and she stays on to assist Coach Eugene till the end of the day.

Disclaimer: Ewan's not part of the class but Faye insisted her brother sit in for the first two lessons. He is her security blanket.

Enjoy these clips from past swimming sessions which I've compiled and they are the best testimony to her progress with The Swimming Room.

When is a good age to start swimming you might ask?

Both my children started at three and a half!
