GIVEAWAY: Art Classes at Da Little Arts School [Book Explorers]
EDIT 22.10.17: Congratulations Tay MK! You have won your child and plus one a Holiday Art Camp at Da Little Arts School this November!
Media Invite
We started art classes because Faye showed an interest in creative play from a very young age. She would receive toys, books and creative craft tools for presents and always, toys will take a back seat. Whenever we window-shopped at Toys"R"Us, she would make a u-turn from the dolls' aisle and find her way to Play-Doh and Paints. There is so much ART in her blood that I threw her a Miffy Art x Slumber Party on her third birthday, executed with lots of laughter by Da Little Arts School.
I had Faye enrolled into the Book Explorers programme six months ago in May. This course is designed for children aged 2.5 to 4 years old. They are introduced to the wonderful world of storytelling through books, songs, toys and interesting props. Classes are made lively by incorporating artworks inspired by these stories! I am glad it isn't just a walk-straight-to-table-pick-up-brush-and-start-painting kind of routine for these little ones.
It is a drop-off programme unlike Little Doddlers for the 18 month to 2.5 year olds, where parents are required to sit in with their toddlers on an artistic exploration experience. This being her very first extra curriculum activity outside pre-school, I was not sure if Faye would allow me to drop her off though.
Her love for Art is overwhelming. So much that it really did not matter to her if I was within sight. I dropped her off successfully to my surprise!
This is one of my favourite artwork that Faye created back in July.
The theme: Singapore.
With every lesson, it begins with story-telling and lots of discussion on the theme the children will be embarking on. It takes two lessons [60 minutes each] for every artwork to complete, starting from the background basics in the first lesson to intricate details in the second.
The materials involving this Merlion and Singapore Flyer artwork include a Lego brick for stamping, butterfly clips to fasten the cupcake holders to the pinwheel, felt, glue, paint, scissors and a whole box of sequins!
Whenever her teacher showed me the final art piece the children were expected to put together, I always wondered how well can my three year old manage this? It looks too complicated! But artwork after artwork, the children proved themselves capable.
There were many times when I wanted to step in to influence Faye on the decisions she made with the colours. I mean, really? You want a colourful mane for Mr Merlion? I thought a single tone would be nicer. Oh gosh and hey girl! Why are you not stamping the Lego block properly to give it that texture your teacher wanted? Oh please don't drag the paint all over?
I realised, as a parent, I am my children's biggest influence. Even from a simple painting activity like this. I observed how Teacher Kiwi gave the children free will on the choices of colour they made. How important it is to accept anything out of the norm, like having a hot pink sky if that's what Faye wanted! Well, why not really?
There were a lot going on at Da Little Arts School's Holiday Programmes including snack time, story time, music and movement with a closing finale of a performance and showcase on the last day for parents. Our review of the June Holiday Programme - Eco Gardens would give you a very good idea about what to expect at BE A TOY MAKER from 21 November to 22 December 2017.

Even though they do not look as well-executed or colour-coordinated as their teacher's prototype, it is in their little touches and imperfections that make it uniquely theirs.
