Sea Apple Shop. I bet you haven't heard of them unless you've been following me on Instagram! Sea Apple is a brand new label based in Singapore that just launched this year! Designed by a local mompreneur, Su Mei, their humble CNY 2016 collection will make you fall head over heels if you find modern cheongsams attractive. Sea Apple has the dress for little girls aged six months to six years. I love distinctive and bold designs. Especially those that can retain the festivity's aura without Chinese brocades and side slits at either side of the hem. I would consider Su Mei's designs, sui generis.

Growing up with a fashion designer mom is not always easy. I cannot walk out of the house dressed in unmatched tops and bottoms. Needless to say, they must all be pressed to perfection. I came to appreciate clothes designed by local talents after her. Not only did she (my mom that is) draw up patterns for men, women and children, she marketed and sold her own designs as well. I was involved in most of her work. From tagging alongside her at fashion shows over high-teas for tai-tais to being her little model for little clothes. It's no wonder I am full-on in supporting local brands. I think it's instinctive!

Sea Apple uses natural materials like cotton and linen for their cheongsam dresses. The limited edition dresses this year also feature a beautiful chinoiserie print from one of the top mills in Italy [Sarah], and a Liberty of London fabric [Sophie], which is well known throughout the world for their exquisite prints and quality. There are only 30 pieces made for each design and by the time this post is out, Sarah could have already been sold out. While the limited edition pieces used fabrics from Italy and London, Sea Apple's fabrics for the other dresses come from Japan and Korea. Su Mei walked the fabric markets first here in Singapore, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and then finally Paris. Settling on her favourites outside the China market. Look at how exquisite little Faye looks in this sophisticated modern cheongsam called Sarah.

This debut collection is named "Indoor Garden". It was heavily inspired by nature and its beautiful palettes. In general, the designer loves to take cues from the art and design world, and the curiosity of children and their sense of wonder. Su Mei does not believe in over-designing for children. This is why she kept the garment shapes simple and classic, and choose materials that are natural, comfortable and laid back for everyday wear. Because quality shouldn't be compromised, many of her designs were discarded before she settle on one. Every iteration leads her down new paths.

I love dressing my children to match and sometimes I join in as well. The toughest part is putting my favourite brands together and make us look matchy-matchy - in different prints! I learnt that keeping the apparels thematic or go with the same shades of colours can make a very unique blend too.

Faye in Jade from Sea Apple | Mom in Laichan
I had to share Jade on Faye too because she looks too adorable it in! It has a distinctive high waist with generous gathers, lovely cap sleeves and pleat detailing at the skirt hem. I chose this because green isn't a typical Chinese New Year kind of colour. I absolutely love the three Japanese pearl shank buttons on the chest and I give credit to the cap sleeves that made Faye looks as if she's a little 公主. Jade is fully lined in matching 100% cotton voile.

Faye looked really cute in every little Sea Apple cheongsam. Her only problem is that she is in between sizes. Size 6-12m fits snugly but also meant she won't be able to wear it again six months down the road while Size 1-2yo is too large for her petite frame. I wished we didn't have this problem but we do! So, I squeezed her into the 6-12m dresses and pray this won't be the only time she'll wear them.

Here's presenting Rebecca and Faye. The flutter sleeves and oriental piping across the chest made my heart skip a beat. A few beats in fact! Made in a peach cotton linen chambray that is soft to the touch,  this piece does not have a lining because it would have otherwise made it too hot to wear in summery Singapore. The zipper on its back is concealed with a hook at the top to fasten the neckline. A simple modern piece that can be worn all year through!

Tell us more about you!
I previously worked for the Government, but had always felt intuitively to find an alternate career in design. I finally gained the courage to leave after meeting many inspiring individuals in business school, who taught me that it is never too late to do what you want. I put myself through fashion classes in Singapore and London, and began walking the fabric markets first here in Singapore, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and then finally Paris. Starting and running my own label is teaching me something new everyday. It is not easy, but I know that I will be able to look back and say that at least I have tried!

When is the next collection and what can we expect?
The next collection is all about the sea and will be coming in March 2016. It is for boys (yes!) and girls. Expect a range of fun, summery gender neutral prints on soft pastels and 100% organic cotton. There will be bibs, bodysuits, dresses, T shirts and the like

Sea Apple Shop is a unique name! How did it come about?
We first came across the name Sea Apple in an article on common trees in Singapore. It is a simple, sturdy tree native to Southeast Asia and can often be seen growing on sandy and rocky shores in the wild. Sea Apple trees were planted close to where I grew up in the East, and there is still one across the road from where I now live!
