And, We Make Five

Gypsie! She had us at Hello.

We brought home a three months old [technically, a two month old because she was 2 days shy from turning three] puppy exactly a month ago and she was already as big as a fully-grown Lakeland Terrier at 7.5kg!

It was never our intention to be pawrents to an Old English Sheepdog. The Dulux icon didn't look like a dog we'd like. Oh gosh that long long long long hair in our tropical weather would be so hard to maintain. Seeing Gypsie in her puppy coat and all so friendly towards us, we felt like we have all the love to give. And for her sake, we will keep her coat short since we have only Summer all year round.

How did we end up meeting Gypsie?

Many pet shops over this COVID-19 period are jacking up prices. People are also buying pets off the internet without even meeting them. I found that quite absurd. How can one commit to a pet without first meeting them?

My family was meant to visit a Labradoodle from another pet shop. However, they did not allow for interaction. The puppy ran to a corner to hide as soon as it saw us coming. The children wanted to reach out but was stopped because of COVID-19. It was difficult to bring home a pet without knowing if it'll be comfortable with us and vice versa. The pet shop owner said that all dogs will love their owners and so, no interaction is needed. Affinity is important to me though. So we left with our tails between our legs. Understanding COVID-19 is still part of us, it is probably only right to keep pups away from humans. Yet, that was the only shop that refused our request.

We went back to our car and Meyer did a quick search on another pet shop he had been following closely for three months. They had two Old English Sheepdogs for sale and they were not put on Reservation i.e. pawrents are required to meet and interact with these puppies before purchasing. We wanted to just swing in to play with the pups since we already travelled to the east. We hadn't expected to fall in love.

The pet shop owner wanted to screen through potential families before selling because this is a high-maintenance breed. They want to home these puppies to families who can promise their commitment. It is scary how puppies are "flying off the shelves" despite its price tags [in the high thousands and also tipping over to 5-figure amount]. I think with the Circuit Breaker and COVID-19 loneliness got people are seeking companionship in pets. I hope we will not see a surge in adoption next year when pet owners regret their purchases.

Did we get a pet for companionship? We must be crazy to want a puppy just to fill any void of loneliness because Ewan and Faye are still really young! They are already taking up every ounce of our time. Daddy decided to bring in a new addition because his children had been requesting for a puppy for more than a year and mommy recalled sadly, "I always wanted a dog growing up. I imagined coming home one day with a brown box tied with a silky red ribbon. When I open it, a puppy jumps right out of it licking me all over my face! My parents said No."

What made him change his mind was a letter his daughter wrote him about how much she'd like to have a puppy. That was a smart move because it tugged daddy's heartstrings. It showed her sincerity and she got her wish fulfilled. That’s how our puppy girl furkid #Gypsie熊猫 came into our family.

Daddy said no to a new baby [human or doggie] for many years. He knew exactly the “trouble” we will get into with all the after-hours walking, the toilet training, the Oh-My-Goodness-I-Am-Just-Starting-To-Get-My-Life-Back-Because-My-Kids-Are-Now-Grown-Up! But it took only just one sincere letter from his daughter that got him searching relentlessly for the perfect pet for our family. He placed that letter on his work desk for months, keeping himself reminded that he doesn’t mind all the trouble if it could make every one happy.

The day we brought Gypsie home, he threw the letter away. It’s a sign of, “Ok! This is done.” She wrote about how she'd like a Golden Retriever and she’d name her Shimmer.

Well, we didn’t get a Golden and definitely not a Shimmer. She’s a girl though and that’s exactly what Faye wanted - a sister.

We met Gypsie and her sister and had such a great time playing with them! Ewan wanted us to bring both sisters home because separating them is such a cruel thing to do. They flew in from Ireland and that's a long way to be separated. “So sad right? They are separated from their mommy at such a young age.” said Ewan, “But she’s in a good family now so that’s not sad. We will love her.” Him being a very sensitive boy also added the sweetest thing, "I wish we never gotten her. Now daddy and mommy got into so much trouble having to take care of her while taking care of 妹妹 and I."

I reassured the children that it's something I'd love to do and I'm not complaining about the extra hours. We just have to be in this all together because Gypsie is now our little sister. Through good and bad times, through happy days and tantrumy days, we stick together.

Ewan, Faye, Gypsie. E, F, G.

The two older kids decided to give Gypsie a Chinese name.

我女儿问我它的华文名字叫什么? 她是婧霏。哥哥是亿文。他们选了 婧文。

Faye is Jing Faye. Ewan is Yi Wen. They deliberated amongst themselves and gave Gypsie a Chinese name - Yang Jing Wen.

They love her. We love her. Even papa who gets upset when we talk too noisily because his youngest dogter is sleeping. When he watches television at night, he puts his headphones on because she’s sleeping by his feet! Oh and how he loves to 抱抱 [carry] her - from living room to bedroom, from bottom of the stairs to the top, from here to there and everywhere.

Well I guess the idea is the same for his human kids and puppy! Better carry them now before they are too big next time. Gypsie has the potential to grow up to 30kg big!

Papa even gave up his 3L turbo coupe and bought a station wagon for his furkid to give her a bigger boot space to sit comfortably in on our rides. That's huge!

And with that, we now make Five.

Photoshoot was done in Capella, Sentosa by Androids in Boots [Ewan 8 years old, Faye 6 years old and Gypsie 3 months old]. Wilson also shot our family when Faye was six months old [Read Post: AndroidsinBoots 2015].

I had always talked about adoption instead of purchasing a pet, educating the kids how stray dogs need a home more. We've sent in a couple of applications and hadn't heard back from any homes since April. Gypsie's affinity came and we bought her from a pet shop instead, giving her a forever home.

  1. I really want to thank Dr Emu for saving my marriage. My wife really treated me badly and left home for almost 3 month this got me sick and confused. Then I told my friend about how my wife has changed towards me then she told me to contact Dr Emu that he will help me bring back my wife and change her back to a good woman. I never believed in all this but I gave it a try. Dr Emu casted a spell of return of love on her, and my wife came back home for forgiveness and today we are happy again.
