GIVEAWAY: AndroidsinBoots

EDIT 23.7.15: Congratulations Priscilla Teo! You have both won yourself a 90 minute family portrait shoot with Androids in Boots!

We went out on a shoot with Wilson from AndroidsinBoots to celebrate Faye turning six months old. It was a very sentimental shoot because we involved my 1972 vintage super beetle which I gave up for the arrival of my second-born. It (I don't name my cars or give them a gender) does not have seat belts to accommodate a child seat and supporting a second car is too imprudent after a second child.

I chose a British colonial estate for this shoot and met Wilson (one half of the brothers who does the stills; William, the other half, does the motion) at York Road. AndroidsinBoots specialises in weddings and how did they fair in family shots? You tell me!

Children photography is very different from shooting weddings. You cannot plan, pose or propose. Even if you did, your suggestions might be thrown out of the window because with children, everything happens too fast. A good family photographer captures a child's personality and energy during the session. Wilson shared with us his ideas and we followed his lead. To be honest, I didn't think he captured anything breathtaking because the children weren't in their best of moods. Ewan just puked from over-eating earlier in the day and it rained on us half-way. We had to seek shelter from inside the car while our dear photographer and assistant stood outside with their umbrellas. They were so calm and in fact, calmer than I was!

The second half of the shoot (after the rain), Wilson decided that we should just have fun. Let's ditch all the posey shots and play instead. We tickled the children, turned them upside down and tossed them into the air. I cannot deny it was tough work because they are heavy! Just imagine carrying and throwing them several times to get one good take. It was all worth the while. We now have all these sensational photographs for keeps and naturally brand-repping for their family photography rate card!

I interviewed Wilson, one half of the brothers behind AndroidsinBoots, so that you can get acquainted with them before they photograph you - wedding or family.

When and how was AndroidsinBoots established?
It was established in 2010 when we decided to walk down a different path then intended. Prior to this Will majored in Engineering and I, in Economics. A penchant for the visual arts led us to create our own work outside, and after graduation we decided to take a chance on ourselves. Thus AndroidsinBoots was established.

Why are you called AndroidsinBoots?
We knew we wanted something young and different, something representative of ourselves. At that point in time we were listening to a lot of indie bands and alternative music, and really liked the word android because it was futuristic and unconventional. (This was before the android phones!) We wanted to add a fun touch to it and that’s how AndroidsinBoots came about.

What made you choose to shoot weddings?
Weddings are celebrations of love and kinship, and the mood and emotions are things we gravitate towards. Throughout the years, we’ve met many couples, each unique and different, and we strive to illustrate and give a voice to their stories.

What artistic direction is AndroidsinBoots heading into?
The creative process is always in constant flux. We work with the knowledge that restrictions will organically shift with time, and that there is always a different angle, a new perspective, an approach redesigned. This way, we let our work guide us to whichever direction it chooses, and it is always something exciting.

Who are the team members at AndroidsinBoots
We have a diverse group of young team members who bring their own fresh perspectives to the table. There’s this spontaneous energy in the office that we thrive on, and the occasional pranks and facebook stalking is highly encouraged. At times we do have our disagreements, and we’re still learning how best to work with one another. But we trust each other’s artistry and that’s most important- to have creative freedom upheld with constructive feedback. This way, we won’t settle on one way of doing things, and will always have room to explore and evolve.

Is AndroidsinBoots adding the family portfolio into weddings?
We've actually been photographing families for a while now! Some who we've seen get married and now started a family. A parent's bond with their child is a beautiful thing that we strive to capture as well.

Their photography presentation to me as a client was even more impressive. They are truly a young team who puts a fresh perspective on the table. Instead of the regular 4R or 5r prints and sift copies in CDs, we received a stack of instagram prints plus a wooden thumb drive of our day's best pictures! Now guess what I did with the prints? They graced my empty-fridge-wall-syndrome.

    1. hahha Adora. Not sadistic at all. When Ewan was crying because he fell down, the photographer was leaning forward to capture that moment but stopped a little wondering if it was ok with me. I went, "Oh Please take that! I love it!"
