SEA Aquarium: A Colourless Ocean
Media Invite
“Love it for real before we lose it forever”, a colourless ocean.
Just by this one powerful line and the thought of A Colourless Ocean made my heart ached a little and the kids sombre thinking about an unprotected ocean and imprisoned marine life.
I am putting effort in this post to put forth the reality that our seas are in danger of losing its colours due to global warming and human activity. That we can all stay conscious about what we choose to do in our daily lives to play our part.
It so happens that this year’s Ocean Fest at S.E.A. Aquarium, illuminates an experience with engaging art installations and fun workshops to educate the public about the threats our oceans are facing. Let us take the time to discuss important messages to our children while we are at it.
OBNOVA BY RIZMAN PUTRA
I love the concept of this art installation called OBNOVA by Rizman Putra. He hand-painted every reef and every inch of this artwork, portraying so much optimism for visitors as we walked into it from a colourless ocean to a flourishing one. Of course I took the chance to share with my children my thoughts and fed them with information they would probably never have thought of.
ZERO PLASTICS PLEDGE WALL
Part of Ocean Fest 2022 includes Zero Plastics Pledge Wall. It is an interactive pledge wall with velcro squares stuck to each grid and on it, a number! Pick from the side, a coloured square piece of cardboard to write your pledge and stand up for our oceans by matching the right number to the velcro on the wall. When the Pledge Wall is filled, a picture of an Octopus will emerge.
Beauty [on the wall or in our world] stems from teamwork and consolidated effort.
TERRA SG UPCYCLING WORKSHOP
While recycling is important, we should also start thinking out of the box on how we can turn "wastes" into useful items. We participated in the Terra SG Upcycling Workshop during our visit at S.E.A. Aquarium during the school holidays. The children learnt how to give everyday items like this plastic milk carton a second life from this hour-long creative session.
We were impressed how a Night Light can derive from a used Milk Carton with some clever tinkering! The children definitely gained some bright sparks from this session and I am sure they will see everyday items in a different light in future.
**Note: Upcycling Workshop has ended.
A Colourless Ocean will end on 16 August 2022. Catch it before it goes away!
