Faye Turns Eight: At The Stables

This is the first time Faye requested to invite friends to her birthday party! It had always been just the four of us and her three cousins. That small guest list was more than enough for her and the parties were always held at home.

Maybe having two Circuit Breaker birthdays felt too claustrophobic or maybe she has learnt to open up and socialise more now that she is in Primary School! She suggested we invited Ana, Ashleigh, Jade, Hannah and Kayla to her birthday party together with her cousins, keeping it to 10 a table!

Off to the stables we went because Faye decided this year's theme to be "Pony".

Happy Eighth Birthday my equestrian-in-the-making!

I asked Faye if she’d like her birthday [rented] ponies to adorn alicorns or floral crowns but she looked at me weirdly and wondered out loud “What is wrong with a horse being a horse?” Love it that you respect the horses so much. Yes! They don’t need dressing up and be made a spectacle.

It wasn’t easy sourcing for Horse or Pony themed party supplies because most little girls would opt for Unicorns. I cannot possibly buy a Unicorn something and chop off its alicorn can I? Well, I managed to come up with something of my own and crossed my fingers it'll fit the theme for her birthday lunch! I cannot deny I was feeling stressed out leading up to her birthday because I had to be the photographer, the videographer, the food server, and I want to be in the pictures too!

We almost missed this mandatory family photo because the day went by with so much action and activities! Girls were running from cake to pony-riding to iced soda to feeding the ponies and to jumping into the waters for a swim. I was running like a mad mom too. I almost got convinced by the husband to ditch the picture-taking because we had no time for it. But man… I was photographer & videographer for the event. I captured everyone’s joy and excitement but none of them had mommy inside. Indulge me. I birthed this little baby pony of a feather. I deserve to be in just one picture right? Thank you very much. This was truly the only one.

Thank goodness everything fell in place even though it was a mad rush. Even though I couldn't finish the setup and had absolutely no appetite to eat my lunch amidst the busy-ness.

The glass bottles were collected over a weekend's BBQ. Up-cycling is good! The labels were cleaned out by Meyer with boiling water and an easy scrub to remove the remnants. We went to a wet market to pick out some baby breaths and wa la! A pretty neat Thank You gift for those who came.

As much as possible, I looked through all the stuff we have at home and put them together for this horsey setup. I was going through scraps of wood too in Meyer's office to see if I could do up a wooden signage for "Faye". Alas... the wood were raw and splintered. It looked too dangerous and so a trip to Art Friend and Spotlight had that "banner" sorted out. Lots of paint, glue gun and ideas from the Instagram community!

By the end of the day, my feet were cramping and my legs ached.

BIRTHDAY RIDE
Faye chose Shady and Tip Toe to grace her birthday. The girls looked like they had a good time riding and feeding the boys! Rain or shine, thankfully Singapore Polo Club has a covered arena. I brought apples and carrots for the girls to reward the ponies after their rides. They were stroking and hugging the ponies! I hope Shady and Tip Toe felt remunerated by the love and treats they received!

BIRTHDAY CAKE
Thank you Sam and Ernest from Cupplets once again for doing a twist in your usual Unicorn cakes into one without an alicorn. Faye chose the Lychee and Rose flavour for her cake. Oh how sweet and girly that sounded! Faye "designed" the cake by putting two-and-two together from pictures she saw online as we did our research for her cake.

"A Brown Pony with Floral Hair"

SINGAPORE POLO CLUB
We chose to hold the party at a familiar venue to Faye, at the school she is currently learning how to ride. It's a relaxing space which allows both humans, horses and dogs to be under one roof. Her party continued on with tennis, swimming and an evening run on the Chukka field. They were very fortunate to play fetch with dogs and witness a Polo match that evening!

BIRTHDAY GIFT
I hatched this idea of a birthday book in 2018. To draw and write a birthday story [according to the birthday theme] for Faye as birthday present. It is timeless and priceless; something I think little girls would appreciate. Well, I would! More than any toys or material possessions the world can offer me.

Faye loved it so much she reminds me whenever her birthday is nearing, “Remember to write this year’s story okay?”

I was nervous about illustrating ponies because their bodies are so hard to draw! Look at my Blue Roan on Page One *hahah* it looks preggers! I shall tell her this pony’s having a little baby in her tum tum to save my face.

The book's the first thing she saw when she came out of bed. That smile that slid across her face and Ewan’s signature comment year after year, “Awww mommy, so nice!”

These were enough to make me feel that everything’s worth the while.

This year, she requested for "Books Books Books and More Books" as her birthday wish list and look what she gathered amongst dresses and some art and crafts! BOOKS! On the day of her birthday, she rushed to the school's library during recess to borrow four more of her favourite titles. I wish she doesn't skip her recess because food is life. But to her, Book is Life.
