Who Is The Culprit For Today's Standard In Primary School?

Every family has different expectations of their children and mine is quite basic for Ewan and Faye. As long as they understand what’s required from school, I am satisfied. The tougher questions set for the top 1% cohort aren’t something I’d bother to touch on in our revisions. They can leave it blank and I shall continue to ensure they will not be fazed by them; putting emphasis in not beating themselves up. I hope I walk my talk because it’s so easy to be sucked into this schooling rat race when society pressures the mom. My children aren’t the top 10% and I do not require them to be.

As cliche as it sounds, I can accept bad results but I cannot accept bad attitude. I enrage whenever their attitude towards work [i.e. their responsibility] fall short of my expectations. I do scream. Yes I do. If you’ve nagged about something 10 times, tell me you can repeat yourself on the nth time with patience and loving-kindness. Sometimes when I get furious, drained or defeated, I raise my voice at the kids and guilt-trip them. That is so very bad of me. Yet, all this talk about Mom Rage really does exist.

I realised though, the basic academic expectations of our Singaporean children are indeed quite high. What I deem as Basic does not equate to what my nation deem it to be. How can I work through this system without forgetting my children’s mental health?

It is very unfortunate I had to do a Chinese Compo practice with Ewan on a weekend. We normally do not touch academics on weekends but I couldn’t finish what I needed him to do yesterday, exams are looming and yada yada yada.

We adults fought for five day work week. Why are our children made to study over the weekend because they too, worked [studied] a five-day week like us! If we want our weekend, they would want theirs too. Working parents do not have time on weekdays, I understand [but the kids don’t]. If we had worked the whole day and feel the burn-out when our bosses send us to a three hour OT meeting, why do we think our children are able to handle a three-hour tuition after school, after homework and after dinner?

Something is wrong here.

I heard some of Ewan's friends [they are only 9 years old] aren't allowed screen time at all until Final Examinations are over. His jaw fell to the ground, so did mine. There are five weeks before our P3s are done with their papers! It is COVID times and there really aren't many places to go for our kids to unwind. TV seems to be reasonable when administered appropriately.

I hope we can all see clearly with each step we take as our children embark in their education journey.

I advocate tuition only if the home is not able to support the child to keep up to the basic requirements of the system. I do not advocate tuition for a child to score 95 when they are already an 85. Oh man! Not everyone can even afford tuition!

This mom here is not able to help her son revise for Chinese Compo because she was a F9-er for O levels June. Culprit: Compo. Although she managed a C5 on the 2nd try, seeking help from an online tutoring platform to focus on Chinese Composition became inevitable at P3. That one hour per week had been very helpful.

I hope this composition is justifiable for a 9 year old. Some parts are abrupt, there are wrongly written characters but he is only but 9. If this isn’t good enough, I don't know what is. I don’t want to push him anymore than this. He is entitled to make mistakes.

Please… the system doesn’t spiral up on its own. It takes two hands to clap - parents and school.

The system is trying to catch up to our children's capabilities that certain parents forged through over-teaching. Other parents get pressured and try to chase the system. Yet other average kids and families like mine who want to have a good balance in life, take the brunt.

My kids do not have academic enrichments since pre-school but I am their tutor who helps with revisions today. I am considered their enrichment too right? If I don't step in with revisions, I will not be able to help them be ready for exams which are set in a way that test the kids more than what they had been taught.  However, I do not teach more than what the school teaches. Yet if I don't, they will not be able to get that last few questions.

What do I do? Where do I draw the line?

Of course, I have to draw the line at my child's threshold. We parents just have to accept that this is how much our child can do. I do not push my child after hearing "He has more potential, he can do better." if he doesn't already have a good balance of play and work.

Teachers say it because it is their job to help our children improve. But we parents have to know when to stop, when is enough.

Let's make the right decision.

A big group of Someone somewhere, has to somehow be brave enough to say, "I want to sit out of this race." and maybe, we will start to see a difference.

    1. Well done mama and son! By the time my children reaches Secondary School, it will be the new system with the Express and Normal streaming. There will no longer be O Levels! I am excited to see what lies ahead =)

  3. So enjoyed reading this and let me assure you, I am walking the talk, exactly like you have written! 85% is definitely good and there is no need for tuition or enrichment. What bothers me, however, is when a child consistently scores well and in the final exam, an unusually convoluted question pulls down his score which might diminish his confidence. PSLE? Well, just another exam!

    1. Thank you Shruti for enjoying the read and resonate with it as well. Love it that you are walking the talk! We have to teach our children that Failure is part of life. It might diminish confidence but we must bounce back. No one wants to get stuck in the ditch for too long. It is a life skill to be able to put that behind us, learn from it and come back stronger =)

  4. Absolutely agree with how you penned it down! Indeed, the system did not spiral on its own and someone has to sit out of this race to eventually see the difference.

  5. You have hot it on the nail. It’s all a catch up game. It’s up to us parents to look out for our children and accept their talents and know when to stop pushing.

  6. Thank u for this. A very good reminder that I need to strike a balance when my girl starts primary school I'm 2 years' time. I have a feeling I will FOMO when I see all other parents doing extra and I am not.

    1. Don't FOMO! Feel proud instead that you are able to tell your child how lucky she/he is.

  7. I was exactly like you, almost....with my eldest...then he didn't do well enough to get into the so called 'good' school. Now we are all sucked into the rat race with my two daughters....I feel so sorry for not being brave enough to 'sit out' of the race....sigh.

    1. Don't beat yourself up. I mean, we make different decisions for different children. They are not all the same too given they are from the same set of parents. At the end of the day, let us all ensure we strike a good balance of play and work for our kiddos. Most importantly, let's ensure they are generally happy rather than sad.

  8. Amazing article! I am also like you. I can accept bad result but not bad attitude. I always tell my children Character is everything. Life is not about how well your scores are but how kind you are. Quite sad to see many children nowadays are pack with back to back tuition cum enrichment which made me felt my kids are playing too much at home but luckily my conscience always alert me they need good childhood memories 😆 not nightmares.

    1. "not nightmares" hahaha Character is so important and I am so happy to see MOE feels the same too. They have given so much more focus on Character building in our school's curriculum. I love it very much!

  9. Since 2012, we have stopped tuition for all our girls as we began to focus on equipping them with study skills. In 2012, my eldest was in Sec sch, my second doing her PSLE and my third just starting primary school.
Our eldest was our experiments with study skills. By final yr Sec 3, she scored a L1R5 of 39 points. For her prelim 21 pt and her O Level 14 points.
My second was using the prototypes and also some new techniques. She was resistant at the start but decided to learn more study skills when she repeated her first year at Millenia Institute. When she started using the study skills, she joined the ranks of the top students. My youngest benefitted from the tested study skills and techniques. We don’t have to tutor her and she has been self-directed with the study skills.
We can definitely move away from the race and need for tuition.

    1. What a story to tell! But I must agree, our first-borns will always have it the toughest because they cannot see what lies ahead beyond them. Neither could we. They help their siblings see clearly and the youngest one benefits from it all.

  10. I echo your sentiments totally. My child is in lower primary too and he too has not taken any enrichments. I believed tuition for those who fall short of grades and need catching up, but I don’t believe in enrichments that is teaching beyond what they are learning in school. Firstly, it creates an unnecessary competitive edge among children of the same level and secondly, it is demeaning the education system (i.e. MOE) in Singapore and therefore the value of teachers. These enrichments are creating a vicious cycle for not just the students and parents, but also for the teachers too. In addition, it is contradicting to what our Education Minister has been advocating in light of the River Valley incident - less stress for students and reduce modules for their school curriculum.
In fact, the standard of the PSLE to accommodate the AL scoring - if adjusted - is going to totally go against what he has said. It is frustrating for parents and even educators, but there is so much we can do...

    1. Thank you for sharing and I hear your angst too .Let's look at this from a different perspective. I don't really think the Education Minister is not walking his talk. Actually I kind of like this new PSLE grading system. I think many of us aren't able to discuss this with conviction yet because al new policies will probably see light and results in 10 years. I have confidence MOE is going the right direction and I must agree with you that parents are undoing the work of MOE, that we are demeaning the education system and value of teachers when we overreach our children.
