M Social Singapore by Phillipe Starck

Have you ever wondered how M Social Singapore looks like in the inside? It is part of the Millennium Hotels and Resorts but what is most inviting about this avant-garde design hotel is that Phillipe Starck designed it!

The hotel boasts 293 rooms but none of them, not even their largest room, housed a King bed. Oh how a family of four needs a King bed, I cannot stress any further. Unfortunately, this isn't a family hotel. There are no roll-away beds available or pull-out sofas that can be turned down in the night into a Single.

We scratched our heads a little and re-considered our options:

1. Upgrade to their Loft Gallery Room where there's a small sofa seating which we can make do for one child

2. Stay put in our Alcove Terrace Room but send one adult and one child home

3. Everyone gets to stay for the night but we had to change our regular sleeping formation to landscape style rather than portrait style [the photographer in me talking]

I really liked the design of our ALCOVE TERRACE ROOM. Starck designed this room with a lot of mirrors, featuring a chapel-influenced arch. It opens into a terrace which is all too dreamy. I especially loved its 4-metre tall triangular roof! However, we gave this room up as soon as we were brought to view their duplex rooms.

We spent the night at the LOFT GALLERY ROOM instead because that stairway was too inviting for the children to play on. We were obviously worried that someone might trip and roll down the stairs but we gave in to this room category because well, its high ceiling being a duplex made it less claustrophobic.

There are two different configurations to their loft rooms. One has the bed situated on the top floor with the study below [Loft Premier Room] and ours had the bed on the bottom and study above our heads.

The full height bay windows definitely brightened up the room and projected an energising feel to the room. Every little interior detailing was made to perfection. Whoever said that a sink should always be in a toilet? Starck had your sink built on the outside where your bedroom resides! Whoever said that wardrobes should have doors? It was a lovely eclectic mix of what he calls,

"Creativity, Humour and Love"

We saw a Robot in the lobby and was curious to find out what it could do. We checked with the front office staff and was told that this Robot named Aura will send whatever we needed - towels, food, toilettries, newspaper or anything at all! Seriously? How does it work? Non-human accompanied? We had to give it a try.

We gave it a test with our own bottle of milk!

1. Place Milk In Robot named Aura
2. Key In Room Number
3. Aura Finds Her Way To Our Room
4. Daddy And Ewan Runs To The Room To Wait
5. Aura Presses The Correct Floor In The Lift
6. Faye And Mommy Follow Aura From The Back
7. Arrives At Our Room
8. Calls The Room To Inform "Delivery Has Arrived!" In A Robotic Tone No Less

How Awesome was that! On one hand, it was so exciting! On the other, I hope we won't be dominated by them some day. What does our future hold really?

Digital convenience is taken as a given. Instead of a regular reception area, there are self check-in kiosks and in every room there is a smartphone with free, unlimited data for guests.

Our experience at BEAST AND BUTTERFLIES restaurant was one filled with many surprises! Lava lamps, a pool table, elaborate chandeliers, iPads hanging on the walls as decoratives and illuminated alabaster tables! You can catch Sam Willows on TV, projected off your flat dining table! How's that for guests of the Millennium?

We had an enjoyable stay and I would recommend this hotel for a couple retreat or smaller families of 2+1. This hotel is branded for the Millennials! Unless you don't mind sleeping in landscape formation like us! Daddy had his long legs over the bed and I believe he hadn't had a good night's rest.

Situated along the banks of Robertson Quay, we had a huge array of cafes and restaurants to dine in. A beautiful walk in the evening all the way to Clarke Quay!

Before we checked out of the hotel, we had a family interview organised by Mediacorp for a parenting project which will feature a series of parenting content on Toggle from March to April 2017. We missed the official shoot last Saturday because we were on our cruise vacation. They were kind enough to organise an interview where we were instead, in the terrace of the Loft Premium Room! We had fun discussing and arguing about pre-schools and its government grants. Catch us soon on screen!

We won a night's stay from a ComfortDelGro Valentine's Day Instagram Contest and we thought it would extend our March holidays a day more by heading straight for a staycation after our Royal Caribbean cruise with the family.

Before I end the post, I should give credit to their staff for honesty. Faye hid my wallet under the sofa and we went home without it. A call to the hotel a couple of hours later and we had it retrieved. Thanks to the housekeeper who kept it aside for my pick-up.
