SG50 GIVEAWAY: wheniwasfour | 小时候

EDIT 13.8.15: Congratulations Khor Lee Ling! You have won yourself a 3 in 1 Zabalang Board Game!

The Jubilee Weekend is drawing near and I have the perfect SG50 giveaway for you! A travel size Zabalang Board Game (3 in 1) to bring with on your holidays or staycations! What? Zabalang? Yes! It's that Singlish word for "Rojak", "Mish-Mash" or in English, a collection of random items. Already the title of this board game won the patriotic me over. I am an easy target for anything Singaporely-nostalgic. Those dragon playgrounds, ang gu kueh, gem biscuits, five stones and many other uniquely Singapore trinkets call out to me like bees to honey. They are my childhood and as soon as wheniwasfour launched our very own Singaporean version of "Snakes and Ladders" and "Aeroplane Chess", I knew it will be a hit! Well, it hit me hard alright!

The characters are consistent throughout the 3 board games. Play as one of four characters inspired by the quirky attributes of Singaporeans:

- Hao Lian Girl aka The Arrogant Girl
- Kiasu Auntie aka The Everything-Must-Win Auntie
- Kan Cheong Uncle aka The Uptight Uncle
- Chiongster Boy aka The Hasty Boy

Whenever you are feeling nostalgic, you can be sure that the likes of “Kiasu Auntie” or “Kan Cheong Uncle” will provide entertainment and bonding between you and your family and friends.

Presenting you the collection comprising three of wheniwasfour's favourite old school board games played the same way as you remembered, only now updated with their unique local flavours:

1) THE GAME OF CHOPE
Visit any hawker centre during mealtime and you are bound to be greeted by an odd sight: packets of tissue paper, umbrellas and newspaper, all placed on tables with no one seemingly claiming ownership to. This is the unspoken rule of reserving a seat whilst food is being queued for. When I first encountered this in Raffles Place, I thought, "How peculiar?" I was being shooed away by a bunch of working class as I sat on their so-called tissue-choped-seats. I thought if we were to dine alone, without any friend to physically reserve a seat on our behalves, we just have to buy the food and find a seat later. Looks like we Singaporeans are getting rather innovative with our techniques!

Using the same rules if the popular childhood game, Aeroplane Chess, with the aim of claiming your rights to the table.

2) MAJULAH SINGAPURA
What does an average Singaporean do? Walk on the train tracks, queue for limited edition Hello Kitty plush toys and inhale sporadic periods of haze (yucks). This game pays tribute to the qualities that define Singaporeans and events that happen "once every 50 years" and on a daily basis in this classic board game. All these happened in my lifetime. Nt particularly my children's, but mine. I especially "fondly recall" the water-dripping laundry when we used to stick our clothes out to dry on bamboo poles. Thank goodness for technology! At least our washing machines have a Spin function now to somewhat dry the clothes before it's being hung out! Oh wait. Are clothes now dried indoors?

3) DRAGONS AND ELEPHANTS
Children of the late 70s and 80s (me! me! me!) grew up sliding down from dragon heads and elephant trunks, figuratively speaking, of course. Because these locally designed playgrounds are few and far between today, we celebrate the simple joys they brought by projecting these playful icons onto an enduring board game, Snakes and Ladders.

By using the Dragon as ladder and Elephant as snake, fond memories are now being evoked from our childhood over a board game!

I enjoy browsing wheniwasfour's online store because they make me sentimental. I must say, "GO LOCAL!" We have interviewed Li Ling, owner of wheniwasfour, just so we all know who we are supporting and of course it bridges the gap closer between buyer and retailer as we click "Check Out".

How and When did wheniwasfour conceive?
Wheniwasfour started 6 years ago with another 2 of my uni mates. We were very much into old school, nostalgic and handmade items. Is the same liking that brought us to do this together. We want to bring back childhood memories, like old places and objects to people, as they start to disappear in a rapidly growing urban city. When technology is advancing so quickly, the pace of lifestyle is so fast, happiness seems to be drifting away at the same time. We hope that our brand can convey the message 'simple happiness' to the people. Through reminiscing our childhood memories, bringing back our childhood games, we hope people can slow down their pace once in a while to look back and actually you can find happiness easily in your daily life and interaction with your family members. Happiness is just simple.

Who owns When I Was Four?
My friends have left the company to pursue their interest in graphic and interactive design. Currently is only me and my mum who's helping me with some of the sewing. Where does the inspirations come from? Everywhere! My memories, my parents' memories, and through conversations with customers especially. They like to share their childhood memories with me too. From there, we start to come out with ideas and products.

What brought about the ideas to the designing of this board game?
In the past, this compendium of board games were very commonly played among the children. However, kids are playing on their own with their gadgets now with very little interactions with friends and family. We hope to re-introduce these old school boardgames to Singaporeans with a local twist so as to bring back their childhood memories and also once again to spark their interest in playing these games and also for parents to play with their kids. :)
