Faye Went To Kidzania!

I received an invitation to attend an event at Kidzania today which enabled us to gain entry to a full day's play. Ewan and I had been going on private Kidzania dates ever since they opened last April. So many that I lost count and he had upgraded himself from a Naturalized CitiZen paZZport to a Distinguished CitiZen paZZport by working 30 jobs.

We had always left Faye behind because well, a KID ticket [S$58] enabling the child to engage in role-playing activities has a minimum age of four. She is only three this year.

I assumed we would be hanging out at the RightZKeepers Residence which is built for kids below four years of age. This place is stocked with toys and bouncy surfaces for kids to have fun and discover their skills and abilities. Yet, how many hours can we spend there before she screams, "I'm Bored!" So I prepped Ewan that I was planning only a few hours at Kidzania and probably leave right after lunch.

Woopaty Hoopaty! We found out that Faye was allowed to play as long as she holds a KID ticket [not the Toddler ticket] and is not afraid to enter the establishments without mommy! Loving the flexibility that I had never known! Of course she will be fine and dandy without mommy because her brother will be alongside her in every job! The ground staff at the check-in counter gave her a blue tag around her wrist to indicate that she's not of age but allowed to play.

I WAS OVER THE MOON! YAHOO! I don't know if Faye realised this very lucky privilege because she could have thought she would be heading in to play with her brother instead of getting stuck at the event with me or at RightZKeepers Residence.

But of course, it is a risk parents have to take because you would have to pay S$58 for the KID [4 to 17 years old] ticket as opposed to S$25 for the TODDLER [2 to 3 years old] ticket. If your three and a half year old decided it is too frightening for her to enter the establishments herself, then your money will go to waste.

Oh how wonderful that Faye got to experience Kidzania the same age that Ewan did at Kidzania Bangkok! He was nearly three years old when he went on his own in a foreign Kidzania and they allowed him to play for as long as he understood the instructions. Now I'm impressed with him and his ability to comprehend such complexity after reading back my Bangkok for Kids post. So brave too!

The rule of the game today was, "Both of you get to choose a job each and to be fair, you have to take turns in choosing. Also, you cannot leave the other behind. So if 哥哥 chose something you don't like Faye, you still have to go with him okay? And vice versa."

We got her a paZZport!

JOB ONE - LIFEBUOY
Just like that, off they went with Lifebuoy as their first job. I love this establishment because my kid get to bring home a bottle of body wash! Saves me a few more dollars from buying the next bottle of soap they finish. Although the bottle shrunk drastically from when they first started, I would still push Ewan to spend some time at Lifebuoy each time we visited.

I didn't quite notice but a parent by the window, watching her kid with me mentioned, "Your son takes very good care of his sister." I observed their interactions more after that comment and saw Ewan always there for her, holding her close or guiding her through the instructions. After all, it's her first time at Kidzania! And I'm thankful he's feeling responsible for her well-being.

Self-Assurance: "I must have done something right"

JOB TWO - NURSERY
So Faye chose to be a Doctor. I was happy to hear that because Ewan had never wanted to give that job a shot the past 10 times he visited Kidzania. He was afraid.

I held their hands towards the hospital and told him that the Nursery job is going to be easy. It's all happy in the nursery where you get to take care of babies and not injured people. He said, "no No no No No." Then as if he needed to be brave and keep his promise to the rule of the game, he relented but he went around telling everyone that his little sister was scared.

Now that got her worried! *hahah*

Having a little sister is a blessing in disguise. There were a few jobs that Ewan refuses to undertake - Firefighter, Police Officer and Doctor. He thinks they are scary and he didn't want to subject himself to unnecessary fear.

He came out of the hospital with, "It's actually not frightening at all mommy! But 妹妹 was scared."

Oh ya. His fault for planting ideas in her head. She came out saying that it was a Real hospital and she saw Real injured person in there! I bet she won't enter the hospital again the next time.

JOB THREE - PADDLE POP
Ewan wanted this to be THE FIRST JOB. Oh ya. Not to be a pilot in the aeroplane but to make ice-cream because he gets to feed on it right after! It is immediate reward! Better than whatever KidZos that go into the card. Oh wait. You have to pay 10 KidZos to work in Paddlepop *haha*

It became a Job Three because the queue was too long. It would have been more than an hour's wait if we joined the queue earlier. So we made a de-tour and I promised them we would be back.

They queued very patiently. Ewan knew what's to come [the ice-cream after the job] but Faye? She was clueless. Suddenly, she asked, "Do I get to eat the ice-cream after that?" When I told her an affirmative yes, she jumped with joy!

I bet subsequent Kidzania visits will have them running for Paddle Pop as soon as they enter the premise.

JOB FOUR - FIREFIGHTER
This is one of the jobs Ewan refuses to do again after his first experience. He was so cute in that firefighter uniform and he was excited to board the fire engine but the thundering sound of fire in the hotel he was putting out fire startled him and he burst into tears. From then on, he refuses to go near it when the building was on fire.

Faye chose to fire-fight today and he again said, "No No No." but relented because he needed to look brave.

Good Planning brings you a Long way at Kidzania. By the time they were done with lunch, it was their turn to be firefighters! Remember to Eat While You Queue!

We arrived at the hotel which was burning up in fire. He took a pause, refusing to walk towards the water hose. But Faye just walked right up to it! He followed suit and when all was done, I heard him telling his firefighting instructor, "Do you know I cried the last time? But I didn't cry today! It's actually okay!"

JOB FIVE - POLICE OFFICER
Again, Faye chose this because Ewan couldn't find a job he wanted to do except to be a Ninja Turtle [it's Sponge Bob at the theatres this season].

My son was pulling his hair by now because this was another occupation he refuses to do again after the first experience last year!

The police officer's job was to crowd control the area around the burning hotel [while the firefighters put out the fire]. So that means, he will be subjected to that thundering sound of fire! Anything to stay away.

Oh but Faye gave him the courage to queue for it and have a go.

Ironically, when these little police officers were ready to head out, Faye stood rooted to the ground and didn't dare go. I wonder what was being said in the briefing but it must have been too realistic for her. She came out telling me that she didn't want to go into the burning hotel! She didn't want fire.

The police officer instructor held her hand tight and encouraged her to finish up her task. She did it! Without crying! *phew*

Faye was not the only three year old engaging herself in role-playing games. Only today, I noticed there were a few more brave little souls! Just as I was wondering how these uber little ones are going to reach the table height, an attentive staff ran out to grab a stool for them! Amazing service!

This deserves a blog post for it is my daughter's first Kidzania experience! At three and a half! Thank goodness she's got her brother there to give her courage [and vice versa].
