Arts for All by National Arts Council

Have you heard of the Community Arts and Culture Nodes? I cannot believe I've only recently discovered them - and now you have too! National Arts Council aims to reach out to people of all walks of life to participate in arts where they live, work and play. One could be living in Punggol, working at Tampines or studying in Woodlands and there will be an arts programme near them that they can be involved in. Many people do not have the opportunity to go to the theatres. By bringing music and dance to these nodes [heartlands], many will benefit from it.

ARTS FOR ALL is a special arts celebration held at the 15 arts and culture nodes islandwide - it promises an exciting line-up of arts activities from 15th to 26th February 2017. With initiatives like these to bring arts to the people, our children will be bound to grow up with a lot more exposure than our time. Running for just two weeks, it will be a pity to give these programmes a miss! All Events Listed Here.

So here's mommy doing her groundwork and picking out those I think my children will enjoy. There are so many overlapping dates though so I will have to choose carefully which to schedule into our weekend calendar!

SAFRA JURONG, Atrium, Level 1
MUSIC AND PLAY!
Date: 19 February 2017
Time: 1400 to 1700 hours

1400 hours: Craft Session by Art Stories
1600 hours: Pots and Hands performance by Pyramid Arts

The children will be creating their own musical instruments with everyday items and bringing them to life. Think Stomp with Pots and Pans. It will be a boisterous music programme which my kids will probably love since they make a ruckus every day! They will take this chance to pick up basic drumming skills, rhythms and grooves from artist Amit Gilboa.

SAFRA PUNGGOL, Atrium, Level 3
A CAPPELLA MUSIC AND CHILDREN'S THEATRICAL PERFROMANCES
Date: 19 February 2017
Time: 1300 to 1600 hours

1300pm: A Cappella Performances
1500pm: The Rainbow Toymaker

Head on down for a fun afternoon at SAFRA Punggol's quarterly series of engaging arts programmes. Enjoy music performances by young talents, Jade and Ashlee (winner of the ACappella Community Awards), and Singapore’s very own vocal rock band MICappella. Families with young children can also look forward to a visually exciting tale of The Rainbow Toymaker by Sweet Tooth (Cake Theatrical Productions). Read about our experience with The Rainbow Toymaker last year!

SAFRA TOA PAYOH, Atrium, Level 1
SHADOW.ART.PLAY!
Date: 18 February 2017
Time: 1100 to 1400 hours

Everyone gets to create their own paper ornament props with crafter Cheryl Teo between 11am to 2pm (while supplies last) which can be brought into the dark room for playtime! In a specially built dark room, you get to creatively explore the world of shadowplay. Shadowplay by Isabelle Desjuex, in collaboration with Playeum, is a highly-interactive experiential installation where children explore their creativity and change the story as they move the light to create shadow art play on the inner walls.

Playeum is just round the corner from our home and we enjoy our time at that creatively put-together play box. I specifically remember the Dark Room in Playeum that got us all intrigued with lights which in turn had us going home to create our own Dark Room too! Come to think about it, I need to start googling on the many hand gestures that would turn into animals for the children for tonight's bedtime play!

SAFRA MOUNT FABER, Atrium, Level 1
AN EFFORT MOST FUTILE
Date: 18 February 2017
Time: 1100 to 1400 hours

Get a chance to view five artworks from Singapore illustrator and installation artist Tan Zi Xi's "An Effort Most Futile" collection. I remember I first came to know about Zi Xi's work at SAM@Q8. She was showcasing the importance of recycling over throwing out garbage in an artwork she put together.

This time, the main message remains. Enlarging the negative effects of plastic consumption and wastage, so as to encourage people to reflect on its repercussions on environmental pollution. You are also invited to jointly create a painting with Tan Zi Xi in a hands-on fringe activity inspired by the collection. The fringe activity is suitable for participants aged 13 years and older. To register for a slot, call 6377 3677.

Loving this quote I stumbled upon at her site which I would like to share:

There is only so little I can do
to help our Earth and our environment
However concerned I am, it will take
much more than my individual effort to
truly make improvements in the areas
most important.

Until then, I can only silently do my part
whilst dragging out the trash and watch
the tragedy unfold as the sky steadily
fills up with plastic bags.
