My daughter needs a bookshelf in her room but I cannot imagine a boxy shelf which will block sunlight and take up floor space in her modestly-sized room. I thought of customising one to fit into her asymmetrical wall but it was gonna cost too much.
As I sat across the potential wall I was going to makeover, several ideas ran through my mind. I had always wanted a floor-to-ceiling library with a movable ladder. Alas. Our wall is to shallow and our 4.2m height has been compromised by her loft.
A good alternative is to use the available wall space she has and make do with affordable Ikea furniture! I love keeping our floors clear from standing furniture to open up floor space.
What have I chosen from Ikea?
One piece of 55cm MOSSALANDA Picture Ledge for the front-facing books.
Two pieces of 120cm BERGSHULT shelf and Six pieces of 18x24cm TOMTHULT brackets [3 for each shelf]
Black planks do not go well with the hues in her room and White planks are too stark in appearance. Plain planks give no texture and story to tell. A quick visit to Art Friend and I had those white Ikea shelves re-painted, giving it a somewhat distressed look with chalk paint. Making over a room is my kind of fun!
TIPS TO PUT TOGETHER A PRETTY SHELFIE?
Showcase the books by its spine.
Showcase other books by its cover.
Feature a stand-alone book on one shelf.
Gradient colour-code another shelf to create a rainbow.
Place some books on the floor and make them look 'read".
Colour-coding the books on one shelf and sticking to one colour.
Lie some books down in a horizontal manner and keep some books up vertically.
Embellishing the shelves with ornaments and pretty bookends to let the space look breathable.
