Inspiring Girls: This Little Girl Is Me

This little girl hardly sees her parents because her dad worked a full-time job and studied at night to improve himself. Her mom worked two jobs and even over weekends. They always encouraged her to dream.

She wanted to be a model, Miss Universe, a back-up dancer, a teacher, a successful business woman, a mother.

She couldn’t be a model nor Miss Universe because she was too tiny to reach the minimum height to catwalk.

She couldn’t dance anymore because at 18 years old, she hurt her back from an intensive ballet summer camp which had her nursing a chronic back issue for decades.

She couldn’t be a teacher because NIE wanted people with only exemplary results. She asked them at application, “Between someone who has passion in teaching with not so good grades and someone who has no passion but very good grades, who will you choose to enrol?” They said the very good grades someone. She couldn't even land herself in an interview.

She is entrepreneurial and registered two companies in her 20s. She wrote her entire website in HTML code. Some of you here were her customers back then! But she gave it all up because she wanted to fulfil her dream to be a mother.

She almost couldn’t be a Mom because she had an issue which did not allow her to conceive. Even if she could, the likelihood of her losing every baby before they were born was high. Only a surgery to correct her womb could possibly do the trick. That journey was tough.

Today this little girl dances for her children and is a teacher to them! She is miraculously a mother despite all odds. She counts her blessings because there are many who trudged through life worst than hers.

What do I want to tell this 9 year old me?

May May, your future is what you make of it. If you are content with what you have, you will naturally find joy in the simple things in life. You will naturally practice optimism. You will not judge and be judged. Contentment doesn’t mean giving up on Ambition; it is respecting the reality of the present.

A teacher need not teach in a school.

A dancer may not dance on stage.

A girl doesn't need to enter a Beauty Pageant to be confident of herself.

When in doubt of yourself, Stop. Look at life from a different perspective and know you are Able.

Remember that Success isn't measured by Job Titles and Salaries.
