The Making of #mmlittle家 - Creating a Smart Home

Media Invite

When we moved into #mmlittle家 in the second half of 2017, I was hoping they would have embraced technology and integrate digital smart home features into the development. However, I was disappointed that nothing was digital. Not the door locks, air-conditioning or lights. In this high-tech digital age, I was very surprised at the missed opportunity. I decided to correct this by personally changing our home into a smart one.

We changed our door lock and door bell to be connected so that we have access to the door from anywhere in world with internet connection. We no longer need to carry a physical key around with us. Instead, using something we already have with us constantly - our mobile phones.

The other advantage is, it frees up our hands. With geofencing technology, we do not have to touch the phone to unlock the door. But my wife does because she is impatient. The door automatically unlocks as we get within range, incredibly helpful when returning home while carrying sleeping children.

The second item I thought we should free off is the air conditioner remote.

Almost everyday, we search high and low for the remote to turn on the air conditioner. Or having to get up while being comfortable on the sofa or bed to adjust the temperature. It’s a no-brainer that we should be able to control our home air conditioning from our mobile phones. Luckily, it’s extremely simple to make your ‘dumb’ air conditioner smart just by setting up a smart controller such as Ambi Climate

Actually my search for a reasonably priced smart air condition remote led me to another brand and I bought three pieces during a promotion to try. It was as expected - simple to use and it replaced our air conditioner remote adequately. However it was just that, a direct replacement for the remote that also has a scheduling function to turn on/off the air conditioners at specified times. The scheduling and geofencing function helps to automate the routines and also saves on the electricity bill. But there was still the problem of the temperature in the room.

We all know that the temperature doesn’t remain constant throughout. We sometimes wake in the middle of the night because it’s too cold or too warm. It would be great if the air-conditioning is smart enough to auto adjust itself to keep the room temperature constant. This was the reason we decided to make the change to Ambi Climate  It adds value by being more than just a remote replacement. Ambi Climate as the name suggests, helps to maintain the climate in the room automatically. In fact, it goes one step further by incorporating AI [artificial intelligence] in its system so that it learns your preferences.

We feel differently about the temperature we want throughout the day, in the afternoon or night, or if it’s raining outside for example. Ambi Climate uses AI to track all [yes even checking if it’s raining using real-time outdoor weather data] your preferences during these different periods to learn and setup the room climate perfectly to what you like. The idea of it is really incredible.

It is a simple setup process after downloading the app. The user interface is clean and fits the iOS design language. You have to register as a user prior to adding the first device. I liked that customisable background for the individual rooms to make it more personal and relatable. Once I setup the five locations in our home, it was also quick and easy to share so that May has the same in a snap.

The devices are shared but the background are not so the new user has to customise the backgrounds on their own apps. Ambi Climate offers three AI enhanced modes:

1) Comfort
2) Temperature
3) Away

Comfort Mode is the most interesting and uses Machine Learning techniques to learn from our feedback [whether it is too cold, a bit warm, freezing etc]. Ambi Climate's AI automatically adjusts the air conditioner to fit your personal preference of comfort, compensating for any changes in outdoor and indoor conditions. You don’t have to set the temperature, sometimes you don’t even know what should the temperature be! May is frustrated over this feature but I love it that the air-conditioner is smart!

If you do know the temperature of your preference, Temperature Mode also uses AI knowledge about the room and how the air conditioner reacts to climate changes to select the best settings for maintaining the target temperature. What these two modes help to do is: No more waking up halfway to adjust the temperature from being too cold or too hot, and saving energy by avoiding overcooling!

Away Mode is something different from geofencing where you can set the air-conditioner to turn on when you’re arriving home. This mode sets temperature and humidity level above or below a certain level when you're away from home in order to ensure your house, pets, belongings and loved ones are protected from unhealthy or extreme conditions. Ambi Climate saves energy this way since it minimises energy costs by switching on your air conditioning only when necessary.

The Ambi Climate unit is larger than the other brand we were using and cannot be conveniently attached to a wall as before. It won’t be easy to have it hidden discretely on a table surface, but makes up by having a clean and chic modern design that would be hard to look out of place.

It also took some adjusting during the first few days to learn how the AI reacts to our inputs. Sometimes it would maintain the temperature too hot or too cold from what we would like it to be. I guess this would be part of the AI learning our preferences.

My wife feels a little annoyed by the beeping of the air conditioner when Ambi Climate makes adjustments. I hardly noticed it myself but at least you will know that it’s working!

After a month now, we had gotten used to the system and vice versa. We primarily use the Comfort Mode as it saves us the chore of adjusting the appropriate temperature during afternoon naps and bedtimes. When checking on the kids (and ambi), the room is maintained at a nice temperature in the middle of the night and in the morning. Scheduling turns off the air conditioning weekday mornings (sleep-in weekends) at 0715 hours which help to automate our routine too.

We have now climate control adding to the convenience of our smart home! For those who like data analytics, Ambi Climate stores a wealth of information for you to review. Just look under the analytics tab to see what has been going in your system. It really makes for interesting viewing. For me anyway.

Ambi Climate is available worldwide and Singapore's Retailers include epiCentre, iStudio, nübox and  We The People Store. Alternatively, you can purchase your units directly from Ambi Climate or Amazon.
