"A Night at the Airport" Family Camp by Changi Experience Studio

It is Ewan and Faye's second camp of the year! [First one was held at home during the March School Holidays facilitated by The Theatre Practice] But this one's the real camp out of our home, inside a real tent but in the comfort of an air-conditioned garden that sings. Although I should have introduced them to an off-the-beaten-track kind of camp under the stars, this immersive environment with an interactive sound installation at Changi Experience Studio's Garden of Harmony sounds like an ideal spot for a first "outdoor" camp.

With our Travel Guide, an interactive tool made from cardboard, we orchestrate as musicians by creating individual sounds though a vertical flapping movement. The installation then harmonises into a grand finale, ONE Changi Symphony. Oh what a beautiful immersive experience it was! Well of course, this musical symphony was turned off at 1030pm to allow families to wind down. The lights were faded, the board games were put away, we zipped ourselves into our sleeping bags and drifted off to sleep. Not in darkness but enveloped in a dimly-lit sleeping garden.

It was mesmerising.

Ewan whispered, "We are so lucky we get to camp in here mommy."

I concur.

CAMPING IN THE GARDEN OF HARMONY

There is only enough space for four tents in the Garden of Harmony. One tent sleeps two, four tents can accommodate eight people.

I like this configuration because not only can we keep to the maximum number of eight, abiding to COVID-19 rules, we get to own a private oasis of camping fun for two families of friends, cousins or siblings. Or even one family if you've got a big brood!

My family of three [daddy went home to take care of Gypsie] shared the same camping space as A Happy Mum's family of four [Summer went home to take care of baby]. Her family and mine made up seven people that night. Boy did the kids go trigger happy with the arrangement.

Changi Experience Studio laid out large doormats in front of our tents and they really cozied up the whole atmosphere. They also provided campers with many board game options like Mastermind, Twister, Uno and more!

We checked-in at 8.30pm [after a day's play hosted by Changi Experience Studio] and that's perfect timing in my opinion. This first-of-its-kind digital attraction is closed to public at 8.00pm; which meant we get to enjoy the space privately [with other campers] as we play to our hearts' content. We were only missing a campfire experience *haha*

Faye and Ewan shared one tent and I took one to myself.

CAMPING WITH A RAIN VORTEX VIEW

Many of us are in awe of the world's tallest indoor waterfall at Jewel's heart - HSBC Rain Vortex. You can now camp inside Changi Experience Studio admiring the stunning display of water cascading down 7 storeys right before your eyes! A vantage point unique to its own.

I must emphasise, inside the privacy of Changi Experience Studio.

Do you remember the luxurious glamping packages that rolled out at Jewel Changi Airport last year? That got everyone piqued by its novelty and it was a sell out because oversea travels were still restricted! I must admit I was very keen on it too.

Until I hear, "Public Toilets", "Shoppers peeking into our tent", "Jewel Changi Airport doors are opened 24 hours to public."

Hmmmm...

I think this arrangement behind the closed door of Changi Experience Studio sounds preferential.

Instead of sharing a public toilet, we get to freshen up within the facility with our fellow campers only. And no one's going to be peeking into our tents when we sleep!

Exclusive Changi Nursery Tour

Closed to public visitations [making it an exclusive], did you know that Changi Airport has its own nursery? Learn about the wonder of flora through an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to the airport’s nursery and see first-hand how the airport’s Horticulture team tends to the plants and flowers that adorn the themed gardens in Changi Airport. Taking inspiration from Terminal 3’s iconic Green Wall, we got to create our own mini Green Wall to bring home too! They say this is a refreshing educational experience for a "town mouse".

What a cute way to put it! I am indeed a Town Mouse. A nursery tour isn't exactly something I'd choose to go because well, I'm just not into floral and fauna. I love the sight of them at home but I just cannot seem to find the green fingers in me to keep them alive.

The children aren't exactly excited about it either but they had fun working on their own framed Green Wall.

It takes 20 minutes to drive from the airport to the nursery and busses were charted for us to get from Point A to Point B.

Airport Emergency Experience

Super interesting! It's something I'd want to go for myself. Changi Airport is protected round the clock by its own team of firefighter. We got to learn about Changi’s Airport Emergency Service through different interactive activity stations and mommy even donned on a fire suit which weighed a tonne!

We got the chance to go on board AES’ fleet of swanky vehicles and see their tools on display too! The children "rescued" passengers in the light, in the dark, picked up basic fire-fighting life skills and saw first-hand how hard our front-liners are working to keep us all safe.

This one's something my whole family really enjoyed.

Craft Workshop

In our own family team, we were given a set of art kit each to craft our own felt Pizza or Sushi. We were Team Sushi! This activity was held in Changi Experience Studio seminar room and we were guided by art teachers who facilitated the session.

Faye totally loved this activity. Obviously, given the artist in her.

This workshop's a nice wind-down activity after all the heavy outdoor work-out at the Airport Emergency Experience.

Note: This workshop has been changed to a Design Thinking Workshop for Nov/Dec 2021 camp]

Changi Experience Studio

In Changi Experience Studio, the play is private and comfortable without an on-going crowd. The camp includes a three-month validity ticket for the whole family to enjoy whenever they are at Jewel Changi Airport!

It was the children's first visit to this unique digital attraction and they had a ball of a time. It doesn't really look much but it was more than enough to keep them entertained. It was quite hard to tear them away. The games had many touch points and it may sound rather unhygienic to be "sharing" the same game stations over this pandemic period. Changi Experience Studio included a bottle of surface sanitiser to spray on high-traffic touch points before or after using them.

Well, you know, due diligence from everyone will keep our fellow campers safe.

Canopy Park

We rounded up our 2D1N camp at the airport at the Canopy Park.

It is such a beautiful place set atop the highest level of Jewel Changi Airport. Spanning 14,000 sqm, my children deem it as a recreational wonderland.

This camp includes tickets for the family to enjoy a day's play at Canopy Park's Discovery Slides, Foggy Bowls, Petal Garden and Topiary Walk. We paid extra for Ewan and Faye to enjoy some bouncy work-out at the Bouncing Sky Nets.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When and where will "A Night at the Airport" be held?

It will be from 26 November to 22 December 2021 at Changi Experience Studio.

How much does "A Night at the Airport" cost?

November runs [early bird special]: S$128 for Adults and S$158 for Children

December runs: S$138 for Adults and S$158 for Children

How cold was it at night?

I found it to be quite stuffy inside the tent especially when we zipped it up. However, the staff at Changi Experience Studio are on site to help with temperature. They brought in portable air-conditioners to help lower the temperature in the Garden of Harmony. It was very comfortable thereafter.

Can I choose my preferred camping zone?

Unfortunately, camping zones at the Garden of Harmony or Rain Vortex is assigned randomly.

Is there a minimum age to the camp?

The minimum age to participate in this camp is 6 years old.

Where do I shower?

While there is a private toilet inside Changi Experience Studio, they do not have shower facilities in there. Each family will be assigned a scheduled time on Day 1 for their shower needs at either YOTEL or Changi Lounge.

Are meals included?

Only breakfast at the Changi Lounge will be provided. Lunch and Dinner are at camper's own expense.

How hygienic are the tents?

I was the last to leave upon check-out and witnessed how the staff turned over for its opening. They pull all the tents to a corner and cleared all the "doormats" in front of each tent. Before putting them away, I saw a staff whipping out a heavy duty sanitiser gun to sanitise each and every mat. I assume the do the same for their tents!
