FUNCTIONALITY: Innovative Takes on IKEA's Products

IKEA is always innovating, ever-evolving in its ways to produce Designs for Everyone. They focus on five dimensions to bring us products that encompass at least one element in its design - a challenge to keep the design team innovative at all times. Unsurprisingly, some products boast all five dimensions in its design.

This is called the Demographic Design Process

1. FORM - this is all about its outlook, the detailing, size, colour and shape of the product.

2. QUALITY - there are products that are low in price and low in quality as well. At IKEA, they strive to work on good quality materials for a longer product lifespan.

3. LOW PRICE - economic purchases targeting people from all walks of lives to enable them in furnishing their homes.

4. SUSTAINABILITY - the use of renewable materials to lower the carbon footprints on Earth.

5. FUNCTION - a useful product serves many purposes and with some bright ideas, there are many ways to use one product and that makes it value for money in our purchases.

In line with IKEA's 2017 catalogue which is all about Demographic Design, I am sharing how FUNCTIONAL their products can be. I will be presenting five products we have at home with its original purpose and two innovative takes on what they can be used for if we think out of the box.

ORIGINAL: Its original usage is for the purpose of plant decoration. Great for both indoor and outdoor gardening atmosphere and it aesthetically enhances any space with its earthy design. I transported it into ur master bathroom and it complements the space next to our tub so beautifully.

ONE: Requiring just a ball of twine and some wooden pegs, set up a photo display with the ladder as a prop. Place it prominently where you want it to be showcased and let it be the talking point when guests arrive.

TWO: Leave most of the beams empty and add just two pots of plants to the ladder, will give you a quick conversion of the plant stand into a clothes rack. Perfect for the children's room because of its [low] height and moms know how a clothes rack can be such a saviour on most days. Read: Small Spaces, Children's Room

ORIGINAL: Its original usage is for the purpose of a display. It totally reminded me of Beauty & The Beast where a single rose sits in the glass dome withering away as each day passes. I had to re-create the scene at best with IKEA's SMYCKA artificial rose and ANVÄNDBAR Vase. Looking all romantic and hopeful, it sits by my bedside reminding me about endurance.

ONE: A little bit of innovation can turn this into a night light. Loosen up SÄRDAL LED Lightning into the glass dome and plug it into the wall for instant brightness in the dark.

TWOShowcase a milestone photo of your child in an Victorian frame and top the glass cover over for an elegant look. It will stand out like a feature on a photo display table. Add some DOFTA Potpourri to the VIKTIGT Chopping Board and Wa La! You've got a display for the toilet to freshen up the room.

ORIGINAL: Its original usage is for the purpose of a table. It makes a functional side table to any room, allowing remote controllers or newspapers be within reach easily from the sofa or bed.

ONE: The top lid acts as a serving tray. Dish out sweets in RAJTAN Spice Jar and IKEA Popsicle Maker for an afternoon snack reward to the children for when they are are at their best behaviours. It is also a convenient serving tray for when guests come over for tea and chats.

TWO: With three removable brightly-coloured compartments, we used it to store the children's Lego pieces by size! It makes cleaning up hassle-free as well especially when the right pieces go into the right tray with the right depth.

ORIGINAL: Its original usage is for the purpose of housing plants and decorating your indoor garden with a mini greenhouse. Move it from the balcony to bedroom and brighten up any tables in the home. Read: Sustainability Begins At Home: Going Green

ONE: How about an art display? I have the children's art works all sprawled over the table, in a mess really because they just kept piling up at the end of each school term. I need to have them "housed" and this greenhouse was the perfect solution to our table chaos. Although Panda Paper Plate didn't look quite happy about being in an enclosure.

TWO: With a large opening on its peaked roof, this piece reminds me of a cute popcorn dispenser! We innovated it for Father's Day this year and created a Popcorn Stand for daddy's day. It was really fun and truly an IKEA-Inspired Father's Day gift with every prop purchased from IKEA. Read: IKEA-Inspired Father's Day Gift.

ORIGINAL: Its original usage is for the purpose of creating functional space. There is only so much a cabinet or drawer can hold. Utilise vertical space by stacking several shelf inserts for more storage space.

ONE: With the many holes in the shelf insert, this would be great to display earrings for the vanity table! Losing one side of a pair will never be a problem again and what a way to choose which earring to wear at a quick glance.

TWO: Creating a magnetic calendar for the bookshelf. Being metal and magnatic, it is a fun way to introduce days, months, years, moods and more to the children!

Inspirations and Innovations never stop. The Functionality Dimension of all IKEA products are beyond words. With a little bit of imagination, every product has a possibility of more than one function and can grow with our lifestyles [however it may change].
