Faye's Love Story Out of her Comfort Zone
Faye could not read her A B Cs properly even in Primary 1.
I let her be.
She didn’t know the sequence of a week and calendar month in Primary 3.
I laughed and let her be.
She does not answer to strangers when they ask her a question. In fact, the entire first year and a half she attended horse-riding lessons, she spoke not a single word to her coach nor her classmates.
I let her be.
She was unable to do Show-And-Tells in class and would end up crying.
I let her be even when she could not be graded.
Just last year, she went to her neighbour's birthday party and sat in the corner for 2 hours refusing to join in any games or magic show. She just sat there observing because she does not want to forge new relationships.
I sat near by and socialised with other mothers.
I believe that every child has their own timeline and I do not really need to rush her through these milestones. We definitely do not need to follow the society’s timeline just to keep up.
Out of nowhere, she started to read like a rockstar and writes like a ninja. She started answering to people’s questions, “How old are you?”.
“10.” that’s all she would give. No more no less.
“How long have you been riding?” they’d also ask.
No reply but wow! She is now brave enough to shrug!
Who would ever have thought that this cautious people-conscious introvert would agree to her friend’s request to join the school’s Talent Show and even got into the Finals!?
This Thursday, she will perform alongside her friend for her teachers and the entire school a song from Taylor Swift.
Love Story.
I honestly am very nervous about it but I shall not interfere and let her be. She most probably will just stand rooted to the ground on stage and get through with the singing as quickly as she could. This is a rite of passage she has to take to come out of her shell. However, it cannot be at the expense of her friend’s chance to clinch the First Prize - the reason I am nervous. We know though, she has a good friend who just want to share this moment together.
Being in the Final 3 to perform this Thursday is already a very very very big feat for Faye. I did not think she could bring herself to finish her song during the audition let alone get through. Getting this far is the prize for me. The extra push she got from being with an outspoken friend came through!
Proud. Why of course. So proud that she could talk herself into doing this.
I will let her be.
This is her moment to own.
