ChiroWorks: A Better Body for #ABetterMay

I have got this nagging back issue when I turned 16 and it never quite left me as I enjoy the first quarter of being 36. It all started from Ballet; being overzealous at the Ballet Summer Camp that came to Singapore that year. I haven't danced for five years but I was determined to make a come-back. Who would have known how inflexible my muscles would be after five years in remission, after five years of training as a long-distance runner in my Secondary School.

I pushed myself crazy at the Summer Camp and overstretched myself; causing this pain that never quite went away ever since.

Through my teenage years, I would get occasional sprains in my back that was quite worrying. I wouldn't be able to stand from a sitting position and another time, I couldn't stand up straight at all! I was hunched 90 degrees towards the ground as my mom tried her best to walk me to knock on doctors' doors.

I saw specialists, general practitioners, physiotherapists, went for massages, and even saw a quack! Nothing really helped. I finally committed my time to a chiropractor after walking past a FREE SPINE CHECK service at Vivo City.

I have very little knowledge about Chiropractic treatments but was willing to give it a shot. Anything to help me get back up on my feet! "Pay for 10 treatments in a package and you can save more." I was told. Okay and so I paid for 10 sessions of five-minute bone-cracking therapy with this particular company.

By the fourth or fifth session, I suffered an aching upper back between my shoulder blades. I understand that there may be downtime after adjustments and left it be to heal before my next session. However, this pain grew and it never went away for six months! I didn't dare return for chiropractic treatments thereafter and didn't dare tell my parents how much I spent upfront!

We turned to TCM to get my back fixed and acupuncture worked! I found my relief and never looked back. However, the sprains kept coming back.

I'd get it from the simple tasks like standing up from a chair, wiping the table with a cloth or getting out of the car.

Then I was introduced to Dr Gary Tho at ChiroWorks after becoming mom. Skeptical. Of course I was! That very bad experience of chiropractic treatments that left me with a sore upper back for six months broke all trust.

Unfortunately, becoming mom gave me more alignment issues. Not only was I trying to prevent a back sprain, I suffered from stiff neck on a monthly basis nursing Faye to sleep. While she was a fantastic baby, sleeping through the night for the first six months of life, she got spoilt by my latching-on-demand regime and didn't know how to put herself back to sleep in the middle of the night. She would wake five times a night and I would nurse her back five times a night. That stiff neck was my doing and it caused me a lot of pain.

There were countless incidents when I hurt my back and neck during the course of motherhood which left me crippled. Crippled in a sense where I had to seek help from the grandparents to watch the kids while I rested.

I decided to seek help from Dr Gary. If all things fail at our first visit, I'll just go back to TCM.

My skepticism started to fade when Dr Gary repeatedly saved me from my back pains. It has been a year since I started seeing him for my aches and each time I walk out of his clinic, I felt a lot lighter. As if the burdens on my shoulders were lifted from his professional adjustments.

While it was a tough year with lots of solo-parenting and house-moving in 2017, I had more than I could bear this year. The Yangs [we] had been travelling a lot this year - Hanoi, Jakarta, Bangkok and a handful of trips coming up. A day before our flight out to Hanoi, I hurt my back while preparing breakfast. It was going to be a busy day ahead and I couldn't find time to check myself into ChiroWorks [what a lousy excuse]. I soldiered through our winter holiday with a bad back and a sore foot.

Thinking back, I had no idea how I managed to cover all that we had with a back like that. I placed priority on everything else including sight-seeing over the pain. It was as if seeing everyone's smiles on their faces was medicine enough to keep me going. The strength of a parent is indescribable. I remember I couldn't even stand up straight as I walked but I could sweep Faye off the ground and carry her to cross the busy streets of Hanoi. It was only after did I realise, "Ouch! I shouldn't have done that."

While Dr Gary had me back in shape in no time after the trip, I hurt my back again the very next month after our Jakarta holiday. I was lamenting to him, "Oh gosh! Looks like my body doesn't allow me to relax huh? Every time I go on a holiday, I come back with a painful back. I've got post-holiday trauma!" The exercises he taught me helped a lot with recovery and I realised that Chiropractic treatments are nothing if I do not put in effort to care for my own body.

If I kept abusing my body no matter how he tries to fix it, we will be getting nowhere with this!

The pain I suffered post-Jakarta was so bad, it hurts even when I was lying down. I remember vividly I couldn't even turn my body without grimacing. It was so painful and stiff that I could hardly carry my wallet! It took me two sessions with Dr Gary that week to fully cure me and got me back to walking. And two sessions was all it took. Impressive much! But of course, not without the homework I needed to do at home.

Example of an exercise to strengthen that back.

Many people seek help from Chiropractors for different reasons. Dr Gary attends to athletes who need to keep their bodies in its best [working] condition for competitive sports and they see him on a regular basis. Others like me, knock on Dr Gary's door when a problem arises.

I was a healthy mom from Jakarta to Bangkok, making sure I did the exercises he told me to. Dr Gary must be wondering where I've been? From seeing him so ever often to none at all. The last we met was three weeks ago and I call that an achievement!

My neck issues were all curbed [well, if I mistreat it again of course it'll return with a vengeance] thanks to Dr Gary's specially engineered contour pillow. A healthy head turn can go up to 90 degrees over your shoulder but I can only do 45 degrees on my left. Dr Gary has a solution for me - The Chicken Wing Stretch.

Come! Have a look and stick around till the end to see what stunts Ewan has in store for you. Loving it that my chiropractor is also a dad of two! Sometimes I need to bring my children with me on treatment days when they have no school and he would gladly welcome them into his clinic. They sometimes end up playing as if they were friends!

Introducing the Latex Health Pillow designed by Dr Gary himself.

The pillow's curvatures provide constant support, even when changing head position while sleeping. There is a higher curve on one side for taller people [Meyer] and lower curve on the other side for back sleepers and smaller framed people like me. It is ani dust-mites, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.

Did I mention that it is hypoallergenic too? It being 100% latex allows for best neck support that won't sag or lose shape. There was also a smell that came with it when we slept on it the first few days - the smell is a characteristic of the latex [non-toxic] and disappears along with time. Best investment for a good night's rest without waking up with a stiff neck!

I bought a pair of Latex Health Pillows as house-warming gifts for my husband and I when we moved into #mmlittle家. It definitely helped me more than the pillow I was previously using. Bad pillows lead to bad necks. QUOTE "LIANG MAY" TO GET S$30 OFF this Latex Health Pillow which costs $138 after discount. You can have it picked up at ChiroWorks [International Building, Orchard Road, #05-10].

DR GARY THO'S CLINIC
On Thursdays, he practices at Capital Tower #12-11 which is prominently located in Singapore Central Business District, right next to Tanjong Pagar MRT Station. I make my appointments between 10am to 12pm to avoid the ERP charges when I do drive. I like this location because I get to have quick lunches with my friends working in Shenton Way before I pick Ewan and Faye up from pre-school!

Other days, Dr Gary is located at 360 Orchard Road, International Building, #05-10 [right next to Isetan Scotts].

To make an appointment to meet Dr Gary, please call +65 6733  4439.

I promise you will be in good hands. No better way to find out if Chiropractic treatments are the way to go for you until you experienced it for yourself. He does not believe in packages because every person seeks different solutions. He doesn't want to sell you 10 treatments to fix your problem when maybe all you might need is just two good sessions.
